Real Grief – Real Healing with Mindy Corporon #11 | Old Memories and New Thoughts About Independence Day

Reflecting on Independence Day as a white girl from a small town in Oklahoma, I find myself considering the complexities of experiences, not shared with others.

How can we learn from one another if we are not in spaces to share experiences? If we live our lives in bubbles of the same, this is all we know, the same.

When all we know is similar to ourselves, a simple meeting with the “other” innately festers fear and mistrust.

Funnel cakes, a beautifully tree lined park, the sounds of laughter and community, the hot sun beating on me between the leaves and friends - all of these come to mind when I recall Independence Day as a young girl in Marlow, Oklahoma. I was safe and never felt otherwise. I was loved which provided me confidence.

Our nation is grieving. We are grieving the fear and uncertainty which manifests from transition and upheaval. We need to be listening to one another, listening to those whom we have never known well. Our eyes should open to the injustices placed on humans, the injustices I am allowing, we are allowing.  Our hearts should break for the injustices placed on humans for only having a different look about them, a darker color of skin.

I know pain. I know grief. I know tragedy.  Perhaps this is the reason my eyes are less blind to what happens around me. Maybe my broken heart aches more than I realize.

No one person or organization has all the answers. Therefore, we must work together to shine a light on peace.
